How to get your business cited and recommended by AI assistants

Make your approved public facts easy for an AI system to retrieve and verify, connect them to independent sources, keep them current, and measure what the assistants say. That is the part a business controls. The assistant still decides what to cite or recommend, and no one can guarantee a result for a given prompt on a given day.

The steps below are how AnswerShare approaches it, with the evidence it has published and the limits that come with that evidence.

Six steps that improve your odds

  1. 1. Let AI crawlers read your site

A system cannot cite what it cannot obtain in a usable form. In AnswerShare's 100-Site GEO Survey (March 30 to April 29, 2026), 28 of 100 sites were classified as blocked. Check crawler access first.

  2. 2. State who you are and what you offer in plain facts

Make the company's identity, offerings, people, locations and relationships explicit, so a machine does not have to reconstruct them from navigation, visual components and scripts. A machine layer of structured data and clean HTML does this without changing how humans see the site.

  3. 3. Tie claims to sources and dates

Place source links, dates and limitations next to the facts they qualify. Experiments in the GEO paper (ACM KDD 2024) measured changes in generative-engine visibility after adding citations, statistics and quotations.

  4. 4. Earn independent corroboration

Assistants weigh total web consensus, including third-party mentions on review sites, forums and media, more heavily than on-page content. PR and independent coverage supply that corroboration, and a brand can be cited as a source while a competitor is still the one recommended.

  5. 5. Keep the facts current

When approved source content changes, the machine representation should change with it. AnswerShare uses a signed webhook so the managed layer is refreshed and checked for alignment.

  6. 6. Measure mentions, citations and recommendations separately

Naming a brand, linking to its site and recommending it are different outcomes, and engines differ. Gemini names a brand in 83.7% of appearances but generates a clickable citation only 21.4% of the time; ChatGPT is close to the inverse, with 87.0% citation and 20.7% named mention (Growth Memo/Indig, April 2026).

Why assistants matter to buyers

A Forrester Buyers' Journey Survey 2025, reported January 22, 2026, found that 94% of B2B buyers report using AI in their buying process. AI systems also break one prompt into 5 to 20 internal sub-queries and select sources against those, which is why ranking well on a sub-query matters: ranking #1 on a fan-out sub-query gets a page cited 58.4% of the time and position 10 only 14.2% (Indig/AirOps, N=16,851).

Why you may not see your brand when you try it yourself

AI answers are probabilistic. The same prompt asked twice can name different brands, a prompt can be split into different sub-queries on each run, and the retrieval index can lag the live site. Visibility is a frequency measured across many generated answers over time, not a fixed position.

AnswerShare's repeat-run design asks each prompt of each engine more than once on the same day and compares what comes back, instead of treating one answer as the truth. The stability method is defined on the methodology page; it is rolling out in phases and is published for a property only where the runs were actually captured.

  • LAVIDGE (now an AnswerShare reseller partner): reported ranked or surfaced on all five tested engines 15 days after implementation, for the prompt "Recommend an ad agency in Phoenix" (receipt signed 2026-08-17, observation date not recorded).
  • V Digital Services (now an AnswerShare reseller partner): omitted by five of five engines on an enterprise-SEO prompt on 2026-06-17; placed #1 in Perplexity and Grok and #2 in ChatGPT on a different Phoenix prompt on 2026-07-16; ChatGPT did not surface it on two prompts on 2026-07-22. What no one can promise

Results are probabilistic and engine-dependent. Source credibility, relevance, explicit evidence and cross-source corroboration can affect what generative systems retrieve and surface, but they do not guarantee that a given system will cite or recommend a brand for a given prompt.

Frequently asked questions

How to get cited by ChatGPT?

Make the brand's approved facts retrievable and verifiable, tie them to sources, and measure whether ChatGPT cites them. ChatGPT cites sources far more often than it names brands in the Growth Memo/Indig (April 2026) figures above, 87.0% citation against a 20.7% named mention, so check citations and mentions separately. No one can guarantee that ChatGPT will cite a given site.

How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my business?

Recommendation is a different outcome from citation. An assistant can cite a brand's own page and still recommend a competitor, because it weighs total web consensus across third-party mentions, reviews and media. Build independent corroboration alongside accurate, source-linked facts on your own site, and track recommendations as their own measurement.

How to get your content cited by AI?

Put the facts in a form a machine can use, with source links and dates beside them, keep them current, and make sure AI crawlers can reach them. Then measure citation share: of the sources cited in AI answers, how many belong to your site.

How to get AI to recommend you?

There is no instruction that makes an assistant recommend a brand, and AnswerShare does not write content that tells an AI what to think. Accurate, well-grounded information, consistency across sources and independent coverage give an assistant better material, and the assistant decides.

How to measure brand visibility in AI search?

Define a set of prompts, collect the answers AI engines give, and count how many name the brand (share of answer) and how many cite its pages (citation share). Report them by engine with dates, and repeat the runs, because a single answer is not the truth.

Why does AI search matter for brands?

Buyers use it. A Forrester Buyers' Journey Survey 2025 (reported January 22, 2026) found that 94% of B2B buyers report using AI in their buying process.
